You’ve wanted straighter teeth for years, but metal braces weren’t the answer. You’re not 14 anymore. Invisalign offers adults a discreet way to straighten teeth without anyone noticing—clear aligners you can remove to eat, brush, and live your life.
At Mountainside Dental, we’ve helped hundreds of adults achieve straighter smiles with Invisalign across our five California locations. The average treatment takes 12-18 months, and most of our patients say they wish they’d started sooner.
This guide covers everything you need to know: how Invisalign works, what it costs, who makes a good candidate, and what to expect during treatment. If you’ve been putting off straightening your teeth because you didn’t want metal brackets, keep reading.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners to gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. Each aligner is worn for 1-2 weeks, then swapped for the next in the series. Over the course of treatment, your teeth move incrementally until they reach their final positions.
The aligners are made from SmartTrack material, a patented thermoplastic developed specifically for Invisalign. It’s BPA-free, comfortable against your gums, and virtually invisible when worn. Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them unless you point it out.

Invisalign vs Traditional Braces
Both options straighten teeth effectively. The experience during treatment is completely different.
- Nearly invisible
- Removable anytime
- No food restrictions
- Comfortable plastic
- Requires 22hr/day wear
- Visible brackets & wires
- Fixed 24/7
- Many food restrictions
- Can irritate cheeks
- Works automatically

How Invisalign Treatment Works
Invisalign treatment follows a predictable process from consultation to final results. Here’s what happens at each stage.
Your Journey to Straighter Teeth
Initial Consultation
We examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and determine if Invisalign is right for your case. Not everyone is a candidate—we’ll tell you honestly if another treatment would work better.
Digital Scan
Using our iTero scanner, we create a precise 3D model of your teeth. No messy impressions or gagging—just a comfortable wand that captures everything in minutes.
Treatment Plan Preview
Invisalign’s ClinCheck software maps exactly how your teeth will move, week by week. You’ll see a simulation of your final smile before we begin—and you can request adjustments.
Receive Your Aligners
Your custom aligners are manufactured at Invisalign’s facility and shipped to our office. We’ll show you how to insert and remove them properly, and what to expect.
Wear and Progress
Wear each aligner set for 1-2 weeks, 20-22 hours daily. Switch to the next set as directed. Visit us every 6-8 weeks so we can monitor progress and provide your next sets.
Refinements (If Needed)
Some patients need additional aligners to perfect their results. This is normal and included in most treatment plans. We want you happy with the outcome.
Retainers
After treatment, you’ll wear retainers to keep your teeth in place. Initially full-time, then just at night. Skipping retainers is the main reason teeth shift back.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign works well for most adults with mild to moderate alignment issues. However, it’s not the right solution for everyone.
Invisalign Works Well For:
- Crowded teeth – When teeth overlap or are pushed out of line due to lack of space
- Gaps between teeth – Spacing issues that affect appearance or trap food
- Overbite – Upper teeth extend too far over lower teeth
- Underbite – Lower teeth sit in front of upper teeth when biting
- Crossbite – Some upper teeth sit inside lower teeth rather than outside
- Open bite – Upper and lower teeth don’t touch when mouth is closed
- Relapse cases – Teeth that shifted after previous orthodontic treatment
Cases That May Need Traditional Braces:
- Severe crowding requiring tooth extraction
- Significant jaw alignment issues
- Teeth that need to be rotated significantly
- Complex bite problems requiring precise vertical movement
Not Sure If You’re a Candidate?
During your consultation, we’ll examine your teeth and take X-rays to determine if Invisalign can achieve your goals. If it can’t, we’ll recommend the best alternative.
Why Adults Choose Invisalign
Adults make up the fastest-growing segment of orthodontic patients. After decades of living with crooked teeth, many finally decide to do something about it—but don’t want to look like a teenager with metal braces. Invisalign solves that problem.
Discreet Treatment
Clear aligners are nearly invisible. Coworkers, clients, and friends won’t notice unless you tell them.
Eat What You Want
Remove aligners for meals. No banned foods, no getting food stuck in brackets, no embarrassing moments at dinner.
Better Oral Hygiene
Brush and floss normally. No special tools needed to clean around brackets and wires. Lower risk of cavities during treatment.
Fewer Office Visits
Check-ins every 6-8 weeks instead of monthly adjustments. Less time away from work and family.
What to Expect During Treatment
The First Few Days
When you first start wearing aligners, expect some adjustment. Your teeth may feel pressure—this is normal and means the aligners are working. Some patients notice a slight lisp for the first day or two as their tongue adapts. Both issues resolve quickly.
Daily Routine
Wear your aligners 20-22 hours per day. Remove them only to eat, drink anything besides water, and brush your teeth. Always brush before putting aligners back in—trapping food particles can cause cavities.
Most patients find a routine: aligners out for breakfast, brush, aligners in. Same for lunch and dinner. After a week, it becomes automatic.
Switching Aligners
Every 1-2 weeks, you’ll move to the next aligner in your series. Some patients feel mild pressure for a day when switching. Others barely notice. Switching at night lets you sleep through the adjustment period.

Invisalign Attachments and Accessories
Attachments (Buttons)
Many treatment plans include small tooth-colored attachments bonded to certain teeth. These give the aligners something to grip, enabling more complex tooth movements. They’re barely visible and removed at the end of treatment.
Rubber Bands
Some cases require rubber bands connecting upper and lower aligners to correct bite issues. Your aligners will have small hooks or cutouts for attaching them. Not everyone needs rubber bands.
Chewies
These small foam cylinders help seat your aligners properly. Bite down on them for a few minutes after inserting a new aligner to ensure a snug fit. Better fit means better results.
Cost and Financing
Invisalign costs vary based on case complexity, treatment length, and geographic location. At Mountainside Dental, Invisalign treatment typically ranges from $4,000 to $7,000.
What Affects the Cost:
- Case complexity – Minor crowding costs less than severe alignment issues
- Treatment length – Shorter treatments with fewer aligners cost less
- Refinements – Some cases need additional aligners to perfect results
- Retainers – Post-treatment retainers may or may not be included
Payment Options:
- Dental insurance – Many plans cover Invisalign the same as braces (typically $1,000-$3,000)
- HSA/FSA – Pre-tax dollars can be used for treatment
- CareCredit – 0% interest financing for 12-24 months
- In-house payment plans – Spread payments over your treatment period
Your consultation includes a detailed cost estimate specific to your case. No obligation, no surprises.
Caring for Your Aligners
Proper aligner care keeps them clear, odor-free, and effective. Follow these guidelines:
- Rinse when removing – Rinse aligners with cool water each time you take them out
- Clean daily – Brush aligners gently with a soft toothbrush and clear liquid soap. Avoid toothpaste—it can scratch the plastic and make them cloudy.
- Soak weekly – Use Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaner to remove buildup
- Store properly – Always use your case when aligners are out. Wrapping them in napkins leads to accidental trash disposal.
- Avoid heat – Hot water, car dashboards, and dishwashers can warp aligners
- No colored drinks – Coffee, tea, and wine can stain aligners. Remove them or drink through a straw.
