Absolutely. Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. In fact, you get more radiation exposure from a short airplane flight than from a full set of digital dental X-rays. The 2024 ADA guidelines confirm modern digital X-rays are extremely safe.
It depends on your oral health. New patients typically need a full set for baseline assessment. After that, bitewing X-rays every 6-12 months for high-risk patients or 12-24 months for low-risk patients. We follow ADA guidelines and only take X-rays when clinically necessary.
According to the ADA and FDA, dental X-rays are safe during pregnancy with proper shielding. However, we typically postpone routine X-rays until after delivery unless needed for urgent treatment. The radiation dose is minimal and focused far from the fetus.
The 2024 ADA guidelines no longer recommend lead aprons for dental X-rays. Modern digital technology and focused beams make them unnecessary. The aprons can actually interfere with proper imaging and don't provide additional protection with today's equipment.
Digital X-rays use electronic sensors instead of film, requiring 50-90% less radiation. Images appear instantly on screen, can be enhanced for better diagnosis, and are stored electronically. Traditional film X-rays take longer, use more radiation, and require chemical processing.
Most dental insurance plans cover routine X-rays as part of preventive care. Typically, bitewing X-rays are covered once or twice yearly, and full-mouth X-rays every 3-5 years. We'll verify your specific coverage and help maximize your benefits.
